The Arc New York Celebrates 75 Years of Empowering Lives

The Arc New York, the largest not-for-profit organization supporting people with disabilities in the state, is celebrating its 75th anniversary. For seven and a half decades, The Arc New York has been dedicated to providing extraordinary opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

History

Founded in 1949, The Arc New York (formerly NYSARC) has a critical mission: to enhance the quality of life for individuals with developmental and other disabilities. At that time, little was known about intellectual disability, and families faced limited options. Parents united to create a better future, advocating for community-based care and rejecting institutionalization.

Throughout the years, The Arc New York played a pivotal role in shaping legislation and policies related to intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Their advocacy efforts led to significant changes in how society perceives and supports individuals with disabilities. Key milestones include the establishment of the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and the implementation of Medicaid Waiver programs, which shifted the focus from institutional care to community-based services.

Programs and Impact

The 36 local Chapters of The Arc New York provide a wide range of support and services for people with IDD and their families across every county in New York state. These services emphasize choice, community engagement, and independence, allowing individuals with disabilities to lead rich, full lives.

Key programs offered by The Arc New York include employment assistance, residential services, day services, education, family support services, and independent self-direction. By helping individuals find jobs, gain skills, and engage with a community, they are setting them up for success in a world that was not built to support their specific needs.

Celebrating Their Impact

Bridge Lighting Ceremony

Earlier this year, The Arc Westchester celebrated its 75th anniversary with a vibrant orange illumination of The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The iconic bridge lit up in honor of the organization’s commitment to empowering lives.

75 Community Service Projects

To celebrate this milestone, ACHIEVE chapters across New York State joined forces to perform 75 acts of service during the week of June 2nd. Each chapter chose community service projects as a form of celebration, demonstrating their commitment to making a positive impact in local communities. Examples include cleaning and updating the Delaware County Fairgrounds, a free Summer fun day dedicated to helping children, and work with the Broome County Humane society to encourage animal adoption.

Bejeweled Gala

On Friday, October 25, The Arc New York will host the 75th Anniversary Bejeweled Gala at the historic Hall of Springs in Saratoga. The event includes a silent auction, live entertainment, and delicious food. Speaker Mickey Rowe, an autistic and legally blind Broadway actor, will also inspire attendees with his journey and insights.

Planning For The Future

The Arc New York has a clear vision for the future. Over the next ten years, they aim to create a universally strong, united organization that shapes the future of support and services for New Yorkers with disabilities. Leveraging their size, financial strength, and high-quality individualized services, they aspire to be the innovators in their field, advocating for inclusion, empowerment, and positive change.

The Arc New York’s 75th anniversary is a testament to resilience, advocacy, and progress. For seven and a half decades, they have championed inclusion, empowered lives, and transformed communities. As they look ahead, their commitment remains unwavering—to create a world where every individual, regardless of ability, thrives. Let us celebrate their remarkable journey and join hands in shaping an even brighter future!
