As one of the first nurseries in the state of Michigan, Thornapple River Nursery was purchased in 1961 by Mary Ellen and Lou Boonenburg. Lou had worked at the nursery during high school and developed a passion for the business. After graduating from Michigan State University and marrying Mary Ellen, an opportunity arose to purchase the existing nursery. Then, in 1962 Thornapple River Nursery was moved to its current location in Ada. Following in their parents’ footsteps and developing the same passion, both sons Scott and Brett, worked at the nursery during high school, attended MSU and have joined their parents in running the business. Three generations of Boonenbergs are now working for the nursery and proudly serving West Michigan.
