The MiddlesexMD website is a voice, force, and resource for women and those they love.  Dr. Barb DePree MD founded the site in April 2011. The inspiration for the website began as class project while she was working on her MMM (Masters of Medical Management) at Carnegie Mellon University. The assignment was to find an unmet need and create a business around that need.  Dr. DePree saw a need for educating women about women’s sexual health issues, a subject that affects women as they age, but that many women feel embarrassed to talk about with their healthcare provider.   Out of a class of 30 other physician colleagues, Dr. DePree’s idea for the MiddlesexMD website was voted ‘most likely to succeed,’ so she ultimately decided to launch it.

MiddlesexMD is an online resource for women over 40, to help them navigate the challenges of sex after menopause, aging, and the sexual changes that result. It is dedicated to empowering women to own their sexual health and stay fulfilled in their relationships. Offering medically sound advice, the website addresses overall sexual health as well as more specific needs through FAQ’s, informative text, videos, a blog, and through newsletters. In conjunction with educating women and helping them understand women’s health changes, MiddlesexMD also offers products for women’s sexual health that empower women to adapt to these changes in their sexual health.

When asked what she enjoys most about her business, Dr. DePree said that it is hearing from women who have benefited from the website and have enriched their relationships; “It’s especially memorable to receive personal notes from women.” One instance in particular which stands out was from a woman physician who stated “your products are saving my personal life. I’ve always recommended these products to my patients, but recently started using them in my own personal life. As a menopausal woman experiencing painful sex, they have made a huge difference!”

In the five short years since the website’s inception, Dr. Barb DePree MD was named the North American Menopause Society Menopause Practitioner of the Year in 2013, as well as being named one of the Top 10 Social HealthMakers on by Sharecare, founded by Dr. Oz and Jeff Arnold.   “Since our business began, there has been an upsurge of interest in both the medical community and popular culture regarding women’s sexual health at midlife. We sincerely hope to see that trend continue” stated DePree.  Today, there’s much more conversation and more options for women. “We want to reach more women and increase awareness and acceptance of midlife sexuality for women. After all, we’re still vital woman, passionate and sexy, when we’re way past 50!”
